What Does Andrew Luck's Retirement Mean for the NFL?

Over the weekend, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck announced his retirement less than two weeks before the NFL season kicks off. Luck is considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, and his retirement came as a surprise to many. 

Luck isn’t the first professional football player to leave the sport in his prime, and he probably won’t be the last. For Luck and others, there are growing concerns about the long-term consequences of playing football. Their health and safety are now big factors in how long they stay in the game, which raises questions about recruitment moving forward. More and more affluent Americans are increasingly unwilling to let their children play, even at the earliest ages, because of the likelihood of brain injury. But for some, especially low-income communities, football is seen as a way out of poverty. 

To make sense of Luck’s retirement and what it means for the NFL, The Takeaway spoke to Joshua Perry, former NFL linebacker who played with the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts, and Buzz Bissinger, award-winning journalist and author of the book Friday Night Lights
